The Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI) is a group of orthopaedic surgeons and medical professionals dedicated to improving the quality of care for patients undergoing hip and knee replacement procedures in Michigan. Founded in 2011, MARCQI is one of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) and Blue Care Network (BCN) Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQI’s). MARCQI currently has over 90 participating sites consisting of hospitals and outpatient surgical centers.
MARCQI has three main goals to improve the quality of care provided to hip and knee replacement patients:
- To improve patient safety and the quality of hip and knee joint replacement procedures performed in Michigan by promoting continuous quality improvement activities throughout the state.
- To improve the quality of hip and knee joint replacement procedures by reporting on results and identifying devices and techniques with superior outcomes through the analysis of registry data.
- To demonstrate to patients and purchasers that MARCQI institutions are improving the value of arthroplasty services.
In addition to the goals above, MARCQI aims to make Michigan the best place to have joint replacement surgery by sharing best practices in areas such as intra and post-operative complication reduction (e.g., perioperative fracture prevention, infection prevention, venous thromboembolism (VTE ) prevention, unplanned admission reduction, etc.), blood transfusion reduction, appropriate use of extended care facilities, device analysis, improving pain management, opioid prescribing , patient reported outcomes and reducing revision surgeries.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan: Value Partnerships
Value Partnerships is a collection of clinically oriented initiatives among Michigan physicians, hospitals, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan that are significantly improving the quality of patient care across Michigan.
One component of Value Partnerships is the Collaborative Quality Initiatives (CQI). These are statewide quality improvement programs, developed and executed by Michigan physicians and hospital partners, with funding and support from BCBSM and their HMO subsidiary, Blue Care Network.
Through collaboration and data sharing, the CQIs are enhancing clinical quality, decreasing complications, managing costs, eliminating errors and improving health outcomes.
