Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs)

What is MARCQI PROM?

The Michigan Arthroplasty Registry Collaborative Quality Initiative (MARCQI) works with Michigan healthcare providers to collect data from patients having hip or knee replacements using questionnaires called Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). These questionnaires help doctors understand the patient’s thoughts about their health and daily life before and after surgery. With this information, doctors can personalize care and understand the results of joint replacement surgeries.

Gathering PROM data can improve the quality of patient care by:

  • Telling doctors about changes in a patient’s pain, mobility, and happiness with their joint before and after hip or knee replacement surgery
  • Focusing conversations between doctors and patients to specific symptoms
  • Allowing doctors to individualize each patient’s care
  • Creating opportunities to improve future joint replacement surgeries techniques and outcomes

MARCQI collects patient’s thoughts about their health before and after surgery using specific questionnaires:

  • HOOS JR – For hip joints
  • KOOS JR – For knee joints
  • PROMIS Global – Overall health status
  • Opioid use – Pain
  • 3 questions from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
  • 1 Patient satisfaction question – After surgery only

MARCQI PROM questions are designed to be quick yet thorough, with 22 questions for hip replacements and 23 for knee replacements. Most patients complete their MARCQI PROM in about 3 to 4 minutes.

MARCQI PROM program helps sites meet CMS requirement for the Patient Reported Outcome-Performance Measure (PRO-PM)
